Support from across this
great nation helps to heal an unbearable loss

Mayerthorpe, Alberta March 6, 2005

On behalf of the members, staff and their families of both Mayerthorpe and Whitecourt Detachments we would like to express our gratitude to the people of our communities, our province and our country for the overwhelming support we have received.

The deaths of our four friends and colleagues has been a tragedy beyond comprehension and we as a family needed some days to be together in private grief. However, we need the communities we serve to know that their outpouring of support, love, prayers, hugs, flowers and caring has touched all our hearts, the hearts of our families and the families of Constable Peter Schiemann, Constable Leo Johnston, Constable Brock Myrol and Constable Anthony Gordon. You have eased a burden that could not have borne without your support. For that we are eternally grateful.

We are proud of our communities, proud to live in them and proud to serve and protect them. We are still here and please know that we will see you soon.

Almighty God, who has called men and women to your service for the protection of your people, and for the maintenance of your right, we beseech your blessing upon the Commissioner, Officers, Members and Employees of this force.

Endue them with loyalty and courage, grant that wherever they may be called to duty or danger, they may be under your protection.

Amen

RCMP Mourn the Loss of Four Members

Mayerthorpe, Alberta March 3, 2005

Background
On March 2, 2005, two members of the RCMP attended a rural residence outside of Mayerthorpe, in the County of Lac St. Anne, to assist with a court order seizure of property, with the intent of keeping the peace. As a result of our members attendance evidence was obtained which resulted in a search warrant being sworn and secured for a marihuana grow operation.

At approximately 04:30 a.m. on March 3, 2005, two uniform members were left to secure the property until Edmonton RCMP Auto Theft Unit members attended the location to conduct a search of the property for stolen goods. Just prior to 9:00 a.m., two additional uniform members attended the residence. At 9:15 a.m., two members of the Edmonton RCMP Auto Theft Unit arrived at the residence, and upon exiting the vehicle, heard shots being fired inside a quonset hut on the property. A male suspect exited the quonset and fired a number of shots at the Auto Theft members, who returned fire. The male was in possession of a rapid fire auto carbine assault style rifle. This suspect retreated inside the quonset. Members of Edmonton and Red Deer Emergency Response Teams were immediately deployed along with other Support Units.

At 1418 hours March 3, 2005, after securing the scene, four of our members were located inside the quonset, and appeared to have succumbed to gunshot wounds. The male suspect has been positively identified as James ROSZKO, who was also located deceased within the same building.

And I Will Make You Proud

We all have dreams

We all want glory

We all have hopes and fears

Each and every one of us.

The memories will last

Forever inside our hearts

Although we say good-bye today

The bond will never fade away.

So don’t shed a tear

For the past

Just look to the future

You know that I’m right

When I tell you to fight

I know that you can

For now it’s my time

You followed me through life

You’ve opened up the doors

And shown the world to me

Now let me go free

To spread out my wings

And I will make you proud.

We all have dreams

And we all want glory

We all have hopes and fears

Each and every one of us.

For now it’s my time

You’ve followed me through life

You’ve opened up the doors

And shown the world to me

Now let me go free

To spread out my wings

And I will make you proud
